Making healthcare research more diverse
with Dr Samit Hirawat, EVP, Chief Medical Officer and Head of Development at Bristol Myers Squibb

Medicines need a supportive scientific ecosystem to make the complex journey from idea to the patient. Clinical trials are the foundation for healthcare research. They are critical in bringing new medicines to patients. Through the data generated from clinical trials, we can answer important scientific questions and get a better understanding of the efficacy and safety of investigational medicines and their potential as treatment options. Data science, advanced clinical trial solutions and robust digital technologies like #AI help to accelerate the medicines development process. Precision oncology, tailored to specific patient needs, is radically changing prognoses and outcomes for cancer. A responsive policy environment can enable healthcare research and delivery. Through the much-needed revision of the General Pharmaceutical Legislation, policymakers can help to future-proof the EU’s regulatory framework. That can make Europe more competitive for future healthcare innovation. As part of a Bristol Myers Squibb collaboration with Friends of Europe, Samit Hirawat, EVP, Chief Medical Officer and Head of Development, explores diversity in healthcare research and a new era for innovation in medicines.
Friends of Europe, a think tank, conducted the interview as part of a collaboration with BMS themed ‘Decoding Bias in Healthcare Research and Delivery’.
